31) South Penquite
(2 Tokens) (1st April–30th Sept)

1400m of single left hand bank. This is a stunning section of the river. It changes from a placid moorland stream at the top, to a wild rushing torrent at the lower end, as it falls off the moor. Due to a barrier at the lower end of the beat it only holds a unique population of brown trout. It is slow to start in the spring but from late April onwards fishes well for
lots of 4-10” fish with the odd whopper over 2lb. Although hard fishing at times, the beat produced plenty of small trout up to 10” last year and one 7 year old angler caught her first brown trout on the fly.
This is a very tricky beat to fish and best suited to worm fishing or a tiny fly rod. It is a woodland SSSI so we can’t trim the trees. It is well worth a try at it epitomises the ‘Wild fish in wild places’ ethos of this scheme. The riverside path has been improved this year. It is now just about passable!
Fly and worm only. No more than 2 trout to be retained per day.
